Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueHard Topwater (Prop)SeasonSummerStructureReedsThe smallmouth are normally deep in these dog days of summer, but if you are looking to land them from shore or shallow, getting out EARLY is the key to success! We we doing well in deltas and shallow flats with topwater and the ChopPOW (as I like to call it) was the ticket. When the sun gets higher, they will move to cooler and deeper waters.

Muskie
TechniqueNed RigsSeasonSummerStructureOpen Water/BasinWhile fishing for smallmouth bass chasing bass in small weed patches, I was throwing the ned rig and instead of dragging it I was popping it. On the fall it got bit and thought I had hooked a smallmouth bass as it pulled and head shook very similar to a smallie. Much to my surprise it was a giant muskie and we were able to net it without hit ever breaking the Shimano 12lb fluoro line I was using. It was released unharmed and was my new PB! I’ve been targeting muskie in the past, but I have definitely caught them more NOT targeting them specifically.

TechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSummerStructureOpen Water/BasinWith the recent warming trend we were targeting smallmouth bass in deeper water, looking for bait balls in around 14 FOW. We found mats of bug hatches and fished in and around them as there were baitfish packed in around these areas. Most were sparsely weeded and had no other cover. The smallmouth were definitely biting on the swimbaits and were hitting best on a slow retrieve. The average weight of the catches was around 4lbs. Catching was consistent from 14FOW to about 11FOW. Air temps started in the low 70s in early morning and upper 80s later in the day. Winds were about 3-5mph.

TechniqueMedium Diving Crankbaits (7'-12')SeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationThe time to be fishing offshore on Lake St. Clair for smallmouth bass is right now! The fish are located anywhere from 13 feet out to 20 feet of water, on expansive flats with perch grass on them. The trick is to cover as much water as possible with a crankbait, that does not touch the bottom, I prefer the Rapala DT 10, making long cast in search of schools of smallmouth bass along the flats. And once you find an area that has a couple smallmouth around, I like to follow up my crankbait presentation with a drop shot or a ned rig and you will be surprised with how many more fish you will catch in that area!

Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructurePointsThe smallmouth bass were pushed in shallow with the latest warming trend that has come through, as they’ve been following the baitfish coming in to warmer waters. The grasses and weeds are starting to die off, but there are plenty of areas for the baitfish to linger up shallow off of points. The weighted wacky rig helps increase the fall and motion of the fat Senko as it moves thru the water. It also helps get it through and vegetation. The crossover ring helps keep the rig intact for multiple catches and helps hold that Senko on the rig longer.

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructureDocksA recent cold front brought the St Clair River temps down just below 70, triggering the big bass to come in shallow around docks and seawalls at the entry point into Lake St Clair. Giving them a wacky rig presentation got them biting. Skipping and pitching a Yamamoto Senko with the Lew’s Pro SP is a breeze and can get your lure into those tight spots of cover where the bass are waiting to ambush their prey. We have another warm up coming thru that’s going to raise the water temps back up a bit, so I’ll let you know how the conditions change. FISH ON!👊💥🎣
