Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureBaitfishIt was slow. It was hard to get all bites by hard jerkbait. Soft jerkabait and tube also worked.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueUnderspinsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureRock PileThe south winds were BLOWING and abusing me in my little kayak, but the water was crystal clear and I knew it was smallie time. I didn’t catch many, only caught 3, but the ones I did catch were TANKS. My smallest fish of the day was 3lbs. Targeted rock piles on the mile roads with my natural looking underspin and a finesse tube and caught some hogs. Saw guys catching more numbers fishing jerkbaits. Happy hunting!

Smallmouth BassTechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileThe air temps were in the low 70s and winds were at about 7mph when we started landing bites in around 14-16FOW along weedlines. You could vary the retrieve from slow to fast, but it didn’t matter…the bite was on! There were multiple 5lbers caught on the Keitech FAT Swing Impact swimbaits. Ironically, I was even catching largemouth on them - they are truly magic!

Smallmouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationEarly morning about 10-12ft with vegetation coming up to 6-7ft deep. Glide cranks right over and bass can't resist. Steady retrieve and nothing too fancy.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureOpen Water/BasinHad a decent day on LSC. The top baits for larger small mouth bass were swim jigs on a Texas rig style hook set up as a drop shot. I had the most success reeling in super slow and giving the bait the occasional light twitch. I tested which depths were working best. I found smaller males to be in the 8-10 ft range. Once I moved out to deeper water 11-15 ft deep is where I was landing larger females. Largest fish of the day was 4.25 lbs

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationSmallmouth have started moving out into the summer depths. Fish can still be had in mid depths from 10-16’ but the bulk of quality fish are in 17’+. A heavy drop shot used to quickly cover water is a great way to locate pods of post spawn smallies.
