CrappieTechniqueSpinnerbaitsSeasonFallStructureLaydownsIn an area with lay downs I was using a modified Beetle Spin to catch Crappie. I had a Bobby Garland Live Roam R on a Mo’Glo jig head that I had swapped out the original 1/16 Beetle Spin jig head with. This modified Beetle Spin was perfect to run along the lay downs. 4lb Sunline was all I needed for this setup. Its sensitivity and strength were spot on for fishing in this area.

Largemouth BassTechniqueLipless CrankbaitsSeasonFallStructureSubmerged VegetationThis lure catches fish all over the place for me! It comes through grass nicely and the fish hammer it! I caught this one bringing the lure up and out of the grass and then over it. I normally yo-yo it if it’s a hard bottom, but with grass I just do a steady retrieve with some pauses and twitches. Set up was a Lews Speed Spin 300 on a St. Croix Victory, with 12lb Sunline braid to a Sunline 12lb fluro leader

Smallmouth BassTechniqueNed RigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructurePilingsI went to Texoma on 01/08/24 for my first fishing trip of the new year. However, I did not take my boat out and decided to get back to my roots and spend the day fishing from the shore. After trying out some of the bluffs at Eisenhower State Park with no success, I moved over to Denison Dam and walked out on the rip rap to where the dam's pump station is, and started casting a ned rig to the concrete bridge pilings on the pump station walkway. My friend and I were able to catch 4 good keeper bass here, 1 spotted bass, 1 largemouth, and 2 smallmouth, with this 3 pound smallmouth pictured with the report being the biggest of the bunch. If I had to guess, I'd say the water on these pilings was about 30-35 feet deep, based on how long it took my ned rig to get to the bottom. We were casting the ned rigs out as close to the pilings as possible, and letting them sink all the way to the bottom before working them back to the shore slowly. It was partly cloudy outside with a steady northeast wind at about 10-12 miles per hour, and the outside air temperatures were between 48-55 degrees all day, with rain showers happening off and on throughout the day as well. Ned Rigs are always a go-to bait in the winter time on Texoma, especially for targeting the smallmouth, so get out on the water, whether its from a boat or the bank, and fight some of those beautiful Texoma bass!

Smallmouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonWinterStructurePointsAlright y’all it’s that time of year on lake Texoma! Red crankbaits are very dominant on the body of water for smallmouth. Many of the fish are moving out on their winter patterns. The water temps are 52-54 around the southern portion of the lake. A vast majority of the fish are around the main lake points with good chunk rock. I retrieve my crankbaits with a fast retrieve and a sudden stop to trigger the fish into biting. If you have forward facing sonar it is very useful to find individual boulders that the fish are sitting on. Good luck!

Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonWinterStructureBouldersDespite having motor troubles most of the day I was still able to do some fishing. Early in the day I spent some time graphing and was able to locate fish between 20-40 feet deep located around channel swing banks and points. However, I was unsuccessful in catching any of those fish. Once the wind started blowing I moved slightly shallower on the points and finally caught a couple on a jerkbait. Water temps were in the upper 40's which isn't to terrible for this time of year. I am hoping to make it back out there either this weekend or the next to dive a little deeper into what I found over this past weekend. I did found out there was a bass club tournament out there over the weekend that took around 5 pounds to win, but I have also seen some good fish caught lately as well. With that it seems Texoma is exhibiting typical winter time fishing which is hit or miss essentially. With the jerkbait fish I caught I really had to slow down my presentation to get those bites. With that I would suggest staying away from techniques that you have to steadily move like swimbaits or umbrella rigs until the water gets back into the 50's. Other techniques to consider would be a football jig, carolina rig, blade bait, and a spoon.
