TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureBouldersHad best luck on dig boulder stretching out off points with a jerk bait and caught walleyes in the entrance into pikes bay throwing 1/4 once under spin with a swim bait in 4-7 feet of water every evening . Great time for first trip to this body of water .

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureLily PadsFished the west end of Vermillion. Most consistent bite was finding the warmer water. Black Bay and river in under 5 foot produced good numbers on the swim jig, followed up by slowing down with senkos and pitching jigs.

TechniqueNed RigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureLaydownsThe fish are pushing up shallow with some fish on beds. Fish seemed to be relating to trees overhanging the water or by lay downs. Skipping a ned rig under the trees produced a lot of qual fish.

TechniqueFinesse Hair JigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureBouldersShorelines with docks and cleaner water. Some wind is good. The Marabou jig was the ticket, slowly reeling back after casting near docks or right next to shore in inches of water. Good luck!

TechniqueFinesse Hair JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRip RapWe fished the East Side of the lake over Memorial Weekend. The water temps in the main lake averaged 58 degrees with some shallower bays reading up to 62 degrees. We found the bite to be pretty tough in the main lake with the exception of a few spawning fish caught while blind casting shorelines. We switched tactics and focused on chasing the warmer water and the bite seemed to improve. This was my first time throwing finesse hair jigs on Vermilion but I'm sold! Smallies seemed to really like that bait on a slow steady retrieve. The Jerkbait also produced (which it normally does early in the season up there) fish, as well as a paddletail while covering water.

TechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePointsShallow rocks and sand for the walleyes, focusing on the middle of the lake from Nile’s bay east. 7-14 foot for the walleyes and the smallmouth 1-7 foot!

TechniqueHard Topwater (Popping)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePointsWe found a good Smallmouth bite during the mornings of 6/5 and 6/6. We got out early to beat the heat and fished until about 10:30am. The water temps in the main lake had gone up by over 10 degrees from 5/31 to 6/5. Main Lake was 68-69 to start the day and was up to 72 in the afternoon. Bays were reading 72-73 in the morning. This quick warmup seemed to put a wrap on the spawning activity as the fish we caught seemed post spawn (we found one fish holding to a bed but weren't actively looking either). My damage was done almost equal parts Popper and Hair but the nod goes to the Popper. Basically fishing topwater on the shallow shorelines or the ones with laydown structure and then slow retrieving the hair on the deeper shorelines.
