Southern side of Mille Lacs is scattered with rocky reefs not far from shore, reachable from Wahkon or Father Hennepin State Park via kayak. Find any set of hazard buoys and cast around a 1/2 oz chatterbait trailered with a swimbait or fluke style plastic on a moderate action rod. Smallmouth bass will post up on this hard structure post-spawn and go wild for the extra action of trailered chatterbait. Vary your retrieve speed to dial in what will trigger the fish, even let it drop to bottom and pop/retrieve with this versatile lure. Recommend tying on Fluro for better abrasion resistance with the zebra muscles covering these reefs.

Targeting prespawners on the edges of rock reefs with frop shots. Fish were schooled up, when i would catch 1 i would cast in the same spot and pull a few more off.

Great opener for me out here. Spent most of my time chasing prespawn fish in 10-15 FOW. Jerkbait was an absolute killer for me this year and still is. So be sure to checkout that setup I got listed. Absolute killer combo for this technique.

I fished from shore under the northern lights on the MN Fishing Opener from midnight to 2:30 am. I got 5 walleye from 18” to 23” from 1:00 am to 1:40 am on the jerkbait. There was only a slight ripple on the water.
