Largemouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureRock PileNewman Lake is starting to pop. Those water temps are creeping up toward 50° where the fish get really active. Find some submerged structure (logs, rock piles, humps) and throw this specific Duo Realis. It is hands down the most productive jerkbait I’ve ever thrown. Way more productive than the Vision 110. Just use a jerk, jerk, pause (3 second) presentation. You’ll be on the fish in no time!

Largemouth BassTechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationAlthough the water is still cold, these fish are in pre-spawn patterns. Target some of the shallower bays on the north and east side of the lake are the best. Look for submerged vegetation in 4’-10’ of water. Throw a Z-Man CrossEyeZ Chatterbait I. Fire Craw with either a 3.3” Keitech trailer (I like to match my Chatterbait color to my trailer) or a 4.5” spunk shad from Hog Farmer. You’ll be on ‘em in no time!

Largemouth BassTechniqueSpinnerbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationThe water temps have finally hit 50°, so where are all the fish? Early spring largemouth will make runs into the shallows during the early morning hours, or during the evening. Outside of those times, they will often pull back to weed lines and look for wandering baitfish. Use a 1/2 oz Megabass SV-3 Double Willow Spinnerbait in Wagasaki to work the weed lines during the day and the shallows during low light hours. No need to put a trailer on the SV-3. Just slow roll it near the bottom. You’ll be on ‘’em in no time.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationBoth the smallmouth and largemouth are cruising the flats in 4-10’ of water near weed lines. Throw out the Duo Realis in a perch pattern. Just work it slowly in the shallows with a twitch, twitch pause cadence. I landed 14 total in about three hours. This was my biggest one that weighed in just over 5lbs.

Largemouth BassTechniqueMedium Diving Crankbaits (7'-12')SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersLook for large boulders in 3’-8’ of water. In the mornings and the evenings, big bass will come up shallow to feed around structure. The Rapala Jointed Shad Rap is the best spring time lure. Just chuck and wind. Grind it into the bottom, whether rocks or sand. It imitates a crawfish so well. Just wait for them to slam it.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBouldersIt seems like the smallmouth are really becoming aggressive as they move up. They are wanting twitch presentations like a jerkbait, jig or Senko. Use a Megabass Kanata GP in the pro perch color. Just use a jerk, jerk, pause presentation with pauses only lasting 2 seconds. The fish will hit it on the pause. You’ll be on them in no time!

Largemouth BassTechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureDocksFlipping all around the docks and caught this one near the middle. Caught with baby bass Yamatanuki. These baits are amazing, especially for flipping docks! So easy!

Largemouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureLily PadsSmallmouth are making beds. Move in shallow (1’-4’ of water) and look for light circles on the lakebed. Sometimes these will have a darker circle of weeds in the middle. They often will be near structure like a boulder or dock. Pitch the Roboworm Alive Shad onto the bed and twitch it a couple times, then let us rest for 3-4 seconds. You should be able to catch a fish off of almost every bed. It’s extremely productive.
