Month: August Weather: Bright with some clouds, almost no wind, 50-70s Water Temp: 76-78 Depths: flats 12-15' and contours 22-30'. I launch from South Shore state boat launch at sunrise and began looking for stands of cabbage and weed edges on the 12-15' flat just outside of the launch. The drift was slow, so I utilized the trolling motor to move across the flat and find active fish. Drifting and casting an inline weight with a locally made worm harness (The Hammond Hammer in any of the purple colors) produced occasional walleye and drum. After a few hours and a light action, I moved to the eastern end of Shackleton Shoal to find more active fish. Once there, it was easy to find schools of fish on the electronics. The drop shot was ineffective, but jigging a blade (anything gold based that resembled perch) back to the boat anywhere that marks were detected produced bites. While many strikes were short, long paused in the jigging cadence brought fish to the net and led to a solid day.

Targeting the deepest weed edges. Look for healthy grass holding good habitat for perch.

13-15 feet deep humps with rock/ mixed grass would produce smallmouth in the 2-4 pound range and some walleyes consistently. Fast retrieve was key to getting the bites
