We had a good trip to Perent Lake in the BWCA in mid-July 2021. There aren't any smallmouth bass in Perent but there are good numbers of walleye and pike. We were able to pick up northern pike in the shallows near lily pads but we didn't find walleyes until we found that they were suspended in about 14' of water near drop offs and ledges. On the west side of the three islands with campsites on eastern side of the lake we found a deep section about 40 yards from shore. We trolled Rapala husky jerk deep crankbaits and once we found them we stopped and vertically jigged with underspins and paddle tails or tipped with a leech. Find them trolling then post up. We found other spots on Perent Lake where walleyes were posted up and the consistent variable was depth between 10' and 15'. The water was cloudy and stained like most BWCA lakes so we used brighter colors and underspins for extra attention.

Spent 3.5 days fishing in the BWCA on Perent Lake. Walleye and Northern Pike are the major game species. No smallmouth surprisingly. For how much effort we put in using a variety of techniques, fishing was slow. The habitat in the lake is very rocky with giant cliff rock sometimes rapidly emerging out of 20 FOW up to 3 FOW. Fish would sometimes orient to these boulders, but our electronics do not tell us what they are. We did catch some rock bass around these formations. Surprisingly, most walleye hit on jerk baits in very shallow water near shore (4-6 FOW) or trolling in 5-9 FOW. Sometimes the dropshot bite with leeches was hot, but it cooled off quickly after the first day. Northern pike fishing was decent and there were a lot of shallow vegetated areas where they hung around. An old fashioned 5" silver spoon was the most productive followed by a small(er) foxriver bucktail (silver blade, black hair). The northerns did not bite any topwater which was disappointing. Other methods tried with some success included Authentix Pulse_R plastics for walleye
