Largemouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonWinterStructureBrush PilesWe got started early around 7 a.m. and were greeted with beautiful weather and active fish right off the bat. The bite started quick, and we caught numbers early throwing jerkbaits, specifically the Megabass Vision 110 and Berkley Stunna. Both baits produced consistently throughout the morning. Most of our fish were relating to brush piles on the main lake in that 6-15 foot range. Nearly every productive area we found had bass positioned on brush, though some were definitely more finicky than others. Cadence made a big difference. Some fish wanted a faster retrieve while others would only commit when the bait was worked slow and methodical, so dialing in your rhythm was key. We did pick up one shallow fish on an Alabama rig off a rock point, but aside from that, the brush bite dominated our day. By noon we had an estimated 18–20 pound limit with multiple fish in the five pound class before we had to head out. Key Tip: If you’re throwing jerkbaits this time of year, add lead wire to your back hook so the bait sinks down and suspends perfectly at brush depth. When that bait suspends naturally in front of fish, your bite ratio goes way up. The fish are definitely biting at Pomme De Terre right now. If you’re heading out soon, keep jerkbaits and A-rigs tied on. Football jig season is coming, but we’re not quite there yet. If you need tackle for your next trip, grab it on the Omnia Fishing app or website and use code LUKE10 to save 10%.

Largemouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonWinterStructureBrush PilesWeather and Conditions We hit the lake on a cold day, with the wind coming out of the north at about 10 to 15 mph. It was a brisk 22 degrees when we launched around noon. The ramp had a thin layer of ice, but we managed to get in just fine. The Bite and Tactics Fish were active right from the start. We were catching plenty of fish in the 2-3 pound range, and after a bit of searching, we found a slightly bigger class of fish in the 3 to 3.25 pound range. The main lure doing the work early on was a jerkbait. We didn’t have to slow down the retrieve much, the fish were surprisingly aggressive given the cold water. Most of them were hanging from the bank out to brush in about 10 feet of water. As the evening rolled in, we switched over to an Alabama rig and found a bunch of fish suspended on points and around brush piles, feeding heavily just before dark. Watching them on the LiveScope, we had a blast seeing them come up and crush the rig. Results and Highlights It was a memorable trip with my buddy Greg. I landed a solid 6-pounder, and he got one just shy of 4 pounds. Altogether, our best five fish would have gone around 20 pounds. If you’re planning to hit Pomme de Terre Lake soon, definitely bring your jerkbaits and Alabama rigs the fish are fired up and feeding!
