Largemouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSummerStructureRip RapFishing all throughout pool 9 was very tough all weekend. The smallmouth could be found in the usual spots with current and rock but the largemouth were very hard to find. Was unable to get many bites with a frog or any topwater. Look for shad breaking on the surface and you'll find the bass. Look for shallow areas next to deeper water like wing dams, points and sand bars. You can see the bass breaking the surface chasing shad into the shallows. Throw a white jerkbait, fluke or even a spinner into the action and you'll catch plenty. The quantity was there but not a lot of size unfortunately.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSummerStructureRock PileThe bite was slow and not many big fish caught. I was flipping a creature hawg along the rocks and following it up with a TRD Ned rig. Weather patterns will be changing soon so I expect the bite to pick up.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSummerStructureLedgesSmallmouth are crushing shad on shallow flats near the main river channel. Look for areas with lots of current, flats and ledge drop offs or sand bars. Work your swimbait along the flats and over the drop offs into deeper water. Smallies are going to smash it!

Largemouth BassTechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSummerStructureLily PadsRecently fished a tournament on this pool of the river. Big bites were hard to come by found many 14”-16” fish in a small lake off of the main river. Moving a Texas rigged chigger craw through the grass got my biggest fish but got many fish on wacky rig senkos and on a drop shot.

Largemouth BassTechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSummerStructureLaydownsWe found largemouth and a few smallmouth along weed edges and channel swing banks with laydowns present. Tried moving baits but had to slow down with Texas rigged craws slowly hopped along the bottom to get consistent bites.

WalleyeTechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSummerStructureRiver ChannelsFound walleyes, perch and largemouth in the backwater channels with current in outside bends and channel swing banks. Key seemed to be the bends with just a little deeper water and was even better with wood present. Most were in 3-6 feet of water. Either a small swimbait or ringworm on an 1/8th oz jig hopped along the bottom. Color really seemed to matter as white or something that was mostly white got bites almost 10-1 compared to other colors we tried. Caught a few bonus smallmouth and channel catfish as well. Great multi-species day.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueCarolina RigsSeasonSummerStructureRip RapDragging a carolina rig over isolated rock piles, wing dams, and sand drops produced large numbers of fish over the weekend. Target structure close to the main river channel for smallmouth. The fish are schooled up. So, when you find one, you will find more in the same area. Make sure to not go TOO heavy on your weight. You want to have just enough weight to keep bottom contact. Also keep your leader SHORT. 8-10" is all you need.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueNed RigsSeasonSummerStructureRock PileWater is still very low and muddy. Water temps were in the low to mid 70's. Smallmouth were about the only thing biting around the Lansing bridge area. Largemouth were found randomly but the smallmouth were on rock piles and laydowns along the channel and secondary channels. Lots of really small are biting but the occasional 15" smallie can be found. Throw a neg rig shallow and drag it along the rocks. A Texas rig along the rocks and in laydowns will also produce if there is current. The bass are chasing baitfish so a fluke will also work.
