Largemouth BassTechniqueShakey HeadsSeasonSummerStructureReedsSpent a few hours on one of my favorite small lakes in the Adirondacks and caught many largemouth and smallmouth while fishing from my Vibe kayak. My best largemouth was 24 inches long and over 6lbs! My best smallmouth was only 2lbs. Both species were hanging around a deep weed bed in 15 to 20 feet of water. Oddly, largemouth were on the deeper (outside) edge, while the smallmouth were on the shallower inside edge of the weeds. I caught both species on a variety of soft plastics, but I caught the 6lber on a Zoom Trick Worm in green pumpkin purple on a 1/8oz Bite Me finesse shakey head.

The hot bait today was a Zoom Ultra-vibe Speed Craw. I dyed the craw tips in red to match the crayfish I had seen earlier in the day, and the bass liked what they saw! As with the previous day, largemouth were on the deeper edge of the grass bed, while the smallmouth were on the shallow side. While I didn't catch a 6lber, like the day before, I caught several largemouth between 2.5lbs and 3lbs. And, I caught several smallmouth pushing 3lbs. As the slogan says, "I LOVE New York!"

The bait of choice today was a Poor Boys Baits 4-inch tube in green pumpkin blue. I used to throw tubes a great deal wherever I fished, but like many fishermen, I moved away from them over the years. But, I decided to bring a few bags with me on the trip and reacquaint myself with them. And, like an old friend that I hadn't seen in a while, the bass and I quickly embraced them. I have a feeling that I'll be fishing tubes much more often after seeing how the fish reacted to them.
