Largemouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureLily PadsWater temp was warm enough I was looking for a shad spawn and was not able to find anything. Very confusing times on Rodman water is down about 10ft according to lake master so the water temp is swinging quite a bit with the weather. A 10 degree difference in a week. We caught a few on poppers early morning. Shallow diving jerkbait was the only constant bite I had. Had a few followers in the 2-3lb range on the 6” freestyle. To be honest the fish are scattered with water temps fluctuating from high 50’s to low 70’s within a week. Probably could have done better if I stayed in the canal or went deep in the river section where fish can come up and feed or bail the shallows for a front.

CrappieTechniqueCrappie Sniping (Casting/Single Poling)SeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureLedgesStarted the day bass fishing caught a few nice ones on the wacky rig on the south end of the lake but the bass wasn’t grouped up there like they were weeks prior. Wind was blowing out of the south around 10 mph. Moved to the channel to see if I could find the staged with the wind moving the water. I caught this nice crappie on the Stuna then went to work with zman micro catching several crappie, bream, and even a couple more bass.

Largemouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonWinterStructureStumpsWeather forecast said we were supposed to have a north east wind, so I decided to fish the south portion of the lake closer to the dam. Conditions was blue bird skies and zero wind. The water was glass and water visibility was about 6’. I found bass schooling on flats but relating to the bank. You could cast shallow with a wacky rig and catch plenty of bass 6” to 8” long. I seen lots of empty beds. The mega bass griffon produced the larger bites. This bait is high float, extremely snag proof in wood, and with a very small profile. It gave me a power fishing option in very finesse weather conditions.

Largemouth BassTechniqueTexas Rigs (Worming)SeasonFallStructureLily PadsSaturday was rough on the west side of the lake(dam side). Water temp early morning was 59 and topping out at the end of the day at 63. No wind and lack of current in the flats mixed with above average barometric pressure made for tough fishing. Started the day fishing top water and chatterbaits and quickly switched to finesse fishing. Slow strolling a speed worm was the ticket. Found bass late in the day deep in the stump field. Got them fired up with a glide bait (no bits) then followed up with a speed worm. Berkley Chop block was perfect for this with the amount of flooded timber the chop block allows the treble hook to be tucked in and plastic has slower sink rate.

Largemouth BassTechniqueTexas Rigs (Worming)SeasonWinterStructureStumpsWas able to catch a few bass fishing stumps adjacent to the main river channel. Wind was blowing pretty hard which made it more challenging to fish from the kayak but the fish were there and biting.

Largemouth BassTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureStumpsEnded up finishing in 4th place in the first Bassmaster Elite Series event on the St. Johns River, and I fished all four days on Rodman Reservoir! I was fishing isolated cover in Rodman, from lily pads to stumps to standing timber on flats anywhere from 4 to 9 feet of water. The fish were moving up to spawn more and more everyday, I was targeting the fish in transition to there spawning grounds and picking them off when they would set up on the isolated cover. Catching them on reaction baits such as jerkbaits and then following it up with the wacky / neko rig to clean house.
