Smallmouth BassTechniqueFootball JigsSeasonSummerStructureReefIf you want to catch smallies on Shoal, you really have to fish around the walleyes—the lake is a walleye sanctuary, so nobody can target the ‘eyes, and they are absolutely everywhere and eat everything. Mid-summer smallies were found in the usual locations on offshore reefs in the main lake and long rocky points that extended out towards deep water. Chunk rock was more productive than bigger boulders and bedrock. Finesse football jigs with small craws (i.e. GLF snack craws) caught the biggest fish but hair jigs on shallow rock also caught some nice smallies. Found very few fish suspended in deep water, but the ones that were located would enthusiastically eat the smeltinator/jerk shadz combo. So many walleyes, though, so be prepared to weed through a bunch of them while bass fishing.
