TechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSummerStructureReedsI was flipping fast banks that had deep cuts in the bank with reeds. It also seemed like when I got bit there were root balls near by. They were holding pretty tight to the bank so it was important to get right up by the reeds. I varied between pegged and unpegged. Pegged weights got bit better, but it varies, so I always have both. Fun day on the water!

TechniqueHard Topwater (Walking)SeasonSummerStructurePointsI found the smallies on points/island heads actively feeding on bait. It helped to wait until they started busting on top and then I’d cast to them. Super cool way to fish for them and they were SUPER aggressive when they did. So much so that they’d blow the bait out of the water. Fun day!

TechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSummerStructureFlooded BrushFish were keying on island heads/points with heavy current rushing over waiting for bait to come down river as well as on cut banks with heavy current. Was able to let the Texas rig naturally flow down onto the top of the point/current breaks before getting bit, same for the topwater, let it drift down current and then worked it across the point/current breaks. Darn good day on the water!

TechniqueNed RigsSeasonSummerStructureRip RapThe smallmouth were in the middle of/just wrapped up spawning from what I could tell. It was a little tougher than usual because of that I think, but was able to find some on the rocks. They were very finicky. The bites I got they were just pecking at it and did not want to commit, hence why I was throwing the ned. I tried flipping the rocks as well as going up and down the river to flip island heads/backwaters/fast banks/sandbars, but didn't have as much luck there. Overall okay day, but was fun running the river, water levels were great so made it easy to get around.

TechniqueNed RigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureRip RapThe water was still pretty darn cold, but felt good to be out on the river that far north and catch some no less. They were definitely more finicky than they are when the water is a bit warmer, but I just slowed down with the ned rig and drifted it down the rock, nose of the boat pointed up stream, and let it drift back to me naturally and that’s how we got bit. Gotta love the river!
