TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationI managed to take 2nd in the IKFC tournament this weekend. It was a windy postfrontal day on the water. The key for me was slow winding a swim jig around the edges of the curly pond weed. I caught a few on the weed edges around shallow rock reefs where bluegill were spawning as well.

TechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationLargemouth bass are still extremely active at Viking Lake. Early in the day has been the best time and fish are going after moving baits. Shallow diving crankbaits such as square squarebills are working great right now fishing areas with submerged vegetation and close to rocky areas.

TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructureBrush PilesPondweed is starting to die off, and Milfoil emerging. Fished brush piles and outside vegetation edges near channel drop-off at points and flats. Some fish located on gravel and rock reefs, plus old road beds. A lot of bluegill beds still evident. Water clarity to 3-4 ft.

TechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationWorked the shoreline with this weighted weedless swim bait. Lots of grass and pond weed, but not a problem with this setup.

TechniqueFrogs/ToadsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureMatted GrassFemales had dumped eggs and were staged around weedlines the first offshore structure near spawning areas. Bucks were up shallow guarding fry. Caught several nice fish on a frog early, then caught the rest on a chatterbait and flipping.

TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationThe males were cruising up shallow with the females on the first break line. It was very strange, the females appeared to be full of eggs and not blemished at all despite the water being in the low 70s, there were fry up shallow, so some had definitely spawned, but not all I guess. Broke off on a good one on a brush pile.

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueLipless CrankbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBrush PilesFish are extremely active with the warming weather. They are sticking close to brush piles, submerged timber, and rocks. Squarebills and lipless crankbaits are working well, especially with reaction strikes. Once again, red and orange seem to be the pre-spawn colors of choice.
