During early spring look for calm areas if you're fishing for smallmouth on the river, and to look for eddies and flooded areas with brush or lawdowns as they could hold fish. Also throw baitfish related such as crawfish patterns, red, shad patterns, and even chartreuse if the water is really muddy.
