The Tatula Elite Chris Johnston Ned Rig rod is the rod you want for Neko rigging. It's a soft tip medium action rod. Perfect length, action, and power. Skipping docks and grass edges i worked that neko during the slack tides. There are lots of good neko baits but I lean towards the Daiwa one most of the time. Just gets bit. That VMC neko hook is special as well. They stay pinned!

Fished the Upper Chesapeake Bay out of Havre de Grace, MD and got onto a productive pattern almost immediately. We started fishing during dead low tide and caught fish in a three foot ditch that ran along a lily pad field. Good largemouth had vacated the pads and positioned themselves in the ditch while the water was low. They willingly ate the Jack Hammer when it was brought past them as they sat in the ditch. The bite slowed significantly as the tide began to rise, but once it began to fall again, the bite got hot. At that time, we moved to a steep bank and began catching lots of good largemouth on laydowns using the Jack Hammer. As the tide got lower, the fish positioned themselves off the ends of the laydowns in deeper water, but they still continued to eat the Jack Hammer. In fact, most of the fish inhaled the Jack Hammer. I hadn't experienced such an aggressive bite in a while!

Fished a memorial day tournament out of Osborne Landing and practiced for a few hours the day before. Bite wasn't lights out, but when you did get a bite, it was a decent fish. While practicing, I caught them on laydowns, docks, points with hard spots and in the backs of pockets. Fish came on the Bucca Brand Trick Shad, swimjig and jackhammer—somewhat junk fishing, but I knew they wanted moving baits. Nigh before the tournament, air temps dropped and on the morning of, the water temp dropped 3-4 degrees. I expected a morning buzzbait bite with the rain and gloomy weather, but to my surprise, no takers. Went back to the glidebait and this time, picked up the Raid Osakana Slide and quickly rounded up two solid fish for the bag: a 3 1/2 & 2 1/2 pounder. Bite slowed for a while and then all the sudden, it was like a light switch—was casting around with a swimjig and BOOM, an easily 7 pounder eats, I set the hook poorly, she runs right at me, jumps and spits the jig... The next 15 minutes was rough mentally, but I kept casting the swimjig in the same area and filled out my limit with a couple 2 quality fish and a squeaker. After getting that big bite and the many that came after, I decided to stick out the hour left in the derb in this area, but to no luck. One rat in the bag and total weight ended up at 12.43. Unfortunate to have the kicker come unbuttoned, but a fun day of learning. Even caught one with a tag in it from the VDWR and the fish was SUPER healthy!

Pitch around laydowns and wait for a subtle tick. Bronco is a thick bait so vary your hookset time to find best results.

Used several small and medium square bill cranks running around 6’ deep along riprap for good bites. All bites came on red or orange colored craw patterns. Flipped laydown logs with ozark rig stickbaits for additional bites.

Got a few swirls on buzz bait early on, it no good bites. Picked up a couple off shallow wood with ozark rig stick bait. Best and most bites came on drop shot fished very slowly around main lake bridge piling.

Fished a club tournament on Lake Anna during the pouring rain and wind. The weather started poorly, improved slightly around noon, and worsened an hour before weigh-in with a line of severe thunderstorms. I actually got off the water as the storms approached, leaving more than an hour of fishing time on the lake. But, I have had too many close encounters with lightening, and I no longer take chances with it. I caught bass through out the day, but I lost four good fish that would have really helped my weight. Unfortunately, I tried to horse them in, as my 82-year old co-angler had trouble with the net. I would up with a small limit of largemouth, most of whom I caught off of stumps or submerged grassbeds. But, it was still a great day on the water!

Practiced for a tournament to be held on April 26 and found a few spawning bass on stumps in main lake pockets. I caught several nice bass, like the 4lber pictured, on a variety of soft plastics, including a weightless Yum Dinger and a lightly weighted Strike King Rage Bug. I also caught a few on Neko-rigged Zoom Trick Worm. The accuracy of casts was critical, as most bass did not want to leave the stumps to chase lures away.

Caught all my fish on docks. Docks were moderately shallow. 8-9 ft in the front of the docks. They were all over the docks. Back corners, dock posts, in the middle, etc. Caught most of them on a trick worm but switched to a neko rig towards the end of the day. Caught over 20 and culled multiple times.

Fished Lake Gaston once again in advance of my club's two-day tournament on April 11th and 12th. Water levels rose and water temps dropped following a few frigid mornings,, several inches of rain, and a significant release of water from Kerr Lake. The heavily stained water moved fish tight to cover, and I found largemouth bass hanging tight against the shallowest dock pilings I could find in the back of creeks and main lake pockets. I caught several on an unweighted, Texas-rigged 4' Yum Dinger in black with blue flake. I never felt the bites. I simply had to watch my line for signs of movement, and I was able to catch a nice limit.

Tried moving baits without success. Caught ten bass, mostly 1.5# average around cypress knees and duck blinds. Equal number of bites in Ozark rig dinger with spinner in the tail and a wacky dinger.
