This outing was on May 9th, 2026. Water temps were in the mid to upper 50's with the key being the 58 to 59 that I was able to find. Air temps started at about 50 and rose to about 60. It was very windy out of the NW. Started out on a drop off right outside a spawning bay and caught 3 quick on a chatterbait and jig, but they were smallish. Then tried some calm areas near shore and noticed some cruisers that were very skittish up shallow. I took this cue and tried another shallow area, but one that was an obvious spawning area and caught a few nice ones on a wacky and neko rigged senko, thrown into open pockets around the weeds, these seemed like they were not spawning yet. I then went further into the shallows and started seeing some on obvious nests and they were the nice fish, from the upper 2's to the 4lb range that you wanna catch. Caught a couple quick and then got out of the spawning area. Found another spawning area and they were definitely on nests, not all of the bass, but a good amount were up on nests and very aggressive. Overall a great day!

This outing is for Saturday, May 2nd. Fished from about 9am to 3pm. Started out fishing in what are obvious spawning areas and didn't see anything, so slid off to the first drop and caught a couple small males on a jackhammer, but nothing worth writing home about. After that left the spawning bay and pulled just outside that bay to a main lake grouping of docks, and it was on! Large momma's were waiting at the docks to make a move to the spawning grounds. Caught a handful of 2.5 to 4lb ladies on a jig skipped up under the docks. Caught 3 on the first docks, 2 on the 2nd docks and 1 on the next couple. Wow was that fun! Water temps were in the mid 50's and it was windy out of the west, with air temps in the low 50's.

Bit of a grind today. Fishing was awesome...but the summer people have come out of their caves and there were wake boarders and jet skis flying all over the place. Ugh! Thought I would never say this...but I'm looking forward to late fall and winter so they'll all go away again. I forced that wacky rig set up out of my hands....which is still crushing...and focused on drop shot and texas rig presentations. Love the Zoom Trick Worms for both and Plum is the money color for me. Couple weeks of warm weather seems to have pushed them shallow again for some spawn activities. Probably just a couple weeks away from crank baits and jerk baits being the way to go out here.

Fishing on NW shoreline on the north side of the lake. Rocky areas with downed trees. 10-20ft depth of water around 20-30ft from shoreline. Cast towards the shore. Used slip bobber, #6 hook, live leeches. Nightcrawlers had no luck. Two bass over 16", both very full of eggs, be sure to return them if you don't need them.

The south winds were BLOWING and abusing me in my little kayak, but the water was crystal clear and I knew it was smallie time. I didn’t catch many, only caught 3, but the ones I did catch were TANKS. My smallest fish of the day was 3lbs. Targeted rock piles on the mile roads with my natural looking underspin and a finesse tube and caught some hogs. Saw guys catching more numbers fishing jerkbaits. Happy hunting!

First bass tournament of the year (team tournament) we drove down from MN to Iowa. First time fishing Okoboji. We learned a lot about the lake. It is heavily pressured and features many tournaments. It was also walleye opener so the lake was very busy. It's been a cooler spring than average so the vegetation growth was behind. We caught some quality fish but it was a grind. Structure jig on laydowns and docks seemed to be the best bet. Subtle presentation. Fun time to open up the season.

We fished the ASABFA State Tournament on Pickwick lake this weekend (3 fish limit). We ended up in 27th/208 and had a tough tournament. We had a pretty good day one with 9.77 with our best 3 but only 6.06 on day 2. Most of our fish came up around the dam fishing a freeloader on a 3/16 jighead and a roboworm on a 3/16oz drop shot.
