Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueUmbrella RigsSeasonWinterStructureBouldersVery little current and clear water had the bass set up deep, 8-12ft. I targeted deep boulders and rock piles using livescope and the smallies came up and blasted the A-Rig.

TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonWinterStructureRip RapFishing around rock piles, boulders and rip rap I have been catching smallmouth really good on a jerkbait. I’ve been using a really long pause 10+ seconds and watching the fish come off the bottom to eat it on livescope.
- Species
Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueBlade BaitsSeasonFallStructureRiver Channels28 degree air temp, 38 degree water temp. Calm sunny day, smallies were holding tight to bottom. I could barely see them down in the rocks on live scope around current breaks. A very slow subtle presentation with the blade bait was the key. Let the bait hit the bottom, lightly vibrate so you feel 3-5 pulses and let it fall again. Most fish I wouldn’t feel the bite, just was heavy when I lifted up.

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonFallStructureRiver ChannelsWater temp was 43 and the Largemouth and smallmouth were snappin! Caught most of my fish on a jerkbait when it was windy and a blade bait when it cooled off. Long pauses (10+ seconds) on the jerkbait were key. With air temps below freezing, I feel like I have more control of a jerkbait with a spinning rod.

Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueBlade BaitsSeasonWinterStructureLedgesI was able to find Smallmouth Bass schooled up off shallow sand ledges throughout the Cedar River. Water temp was 38 degrees and a slow blade bait presentation proved to be the ticket. Barely moving the blade with long pauses on the bottom seemed to produce the best results.
- Species
Walleye
TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonWinterStructureLedgesWater temp was 37. Walleyes were stacked along sand ledges in 5-7ft. Found fish on side scan and setup on them with livescope and 360. Caught a few on the blade bait, but jerkbait was the ticket. The shadow rap (jerkbait) has a slow sink which is perfect in this cold water. Long pauses were key. I tried other jerkbaits with neutral buoyancy or a slow rise and fish were not interested. Once I found the school it was almost every cast, caught about 45 walleyes.

Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueTubesSeasonWinterStructureLedges33 degree water with ice forming while I was out there. I had to fish extremely slow and let my bait sit for long pauses before dragging again. I targeted subtle ledges in 4-6ft and casted at groups of fish I could see on livescope.
