TechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureLaydownsFished the Upper Chesapeake Bay out of Havre de Grace, MD and got onto a productive pattern almost immediately. We started fishing during dead low tide and caught fish in a three foot ditch that ran along a lily pad field. Good largemouth had vacated the pads and positioned themselves in the ditch while the water was low. They willingly ate the Jack Hammer when it was brought past them as they sat in the ditch. The bite slowed significantly as the tide began to rise, but once it began to fall again, the bite got hot. At that time, we moved to a steep bank and began catching lots of good largemouth on laydowns using the Jack Hammer. As the tide got lower, the fish positioned themselves off the ends of the laydowns in deeper water, but they still continued to eat the Jack Hammer. In fact, most of the fish inhaled the Jack Hammer. I hadn't experienced such an aggressive bite in a while!

TechniqueNeko RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureDocksThe Tatula Elite Chris Johnston Ned Rig rod is the rod you want for Neko rigging. It's a soft tip medium action rod. Perfect length, action, and power. Skipping docks and grass edges i worked that neko during the slack tides. There are lots of good neko baits but I lean towards the Daiwa one most of the time. Just gets bit. That VMC neko hook is special as well. They stay pinned!

TechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationCasting a 3/8 chatterbait up onto a small wind blown shallow pocket (1’-3’) surrounded by arrowhead just outside the creek channel on an outgoing tide. You could see groups of bull minnows busting around the edges of the arrowhead. Lots of activity from white perch in the area as well. Gold blades and chartreuse are must haves for me when fishing tidal Chesapeake tributaries.

TechniqueTexas Rigs (Worming)SeasonSummerStructureLaydownsFished a club tournament on the Upper Bay out of Havre de Grace, MD on the hottest day of the year - 102 degrees and humid! The bite was difficult for most of the day. While I caught lots of bass, most were too short to keep. With 40 minutes left before weigh-in, I moved to a flat with flooded timber and hydrilla. I caught my 5-fish limit in 5 minutes off of a single laydown on 6 casts. All of my fish came on a Texas-rigged Berkley Power Worm in blue fleck. I rigged the worm on Mustad's new Alpha-Point Series Alpha-Grip Finesse Hook (3/0), and I can honestly say that I never feared losing a single fish. That hook is simply amazing!
