TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileLearn and trust your Electronics no matter what you are using, If you have your Grandpa's Green box or the latest unit, learn it. We were throwing Berkley Champ swimmers with a 3/8 oz jig into 3-10 feet of water targeting active Walleyes on top. Using 10 lb braid tying about a 6' piece of 8lb mono and tying direct to the jig. Throw out onto the rock pile and use a slow snapping action on the retrieve back to the boat or cast onto the hump and just reel it back to the boat. Before you start using your plastic twist and pull on the tail careful not to break it off to loosen up the tail so it vibrates more in the water. Good Luck!

TechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureLedgesAfter a hot bite all spring, a stable high pressure fair weather front moved in the first week of June 2022. Little wind and bright sunny days all week made walleye fishing tough. Still, we caught several keeper walleye and sauger targeting the base of reef and shoreline breaks in 30-35 ft of water. 1/4 oz round jig and minnow were the ticket and also a drop shot with a #3 Gamakatsu octopus hook. The walleye and sauger turned their nose at leeches but a leech bite should start soon. Water was still 5ft high with tons of water in the woods. Traditional smallmouth spawning grounds were likely out of commission and thus the smallmouth were in a funky pre-spawn phase likely searching for new spawning areas. As such the smallmouth bite was non-existent for me last week.

TechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationLook for wind blown shorelines with weeds coming up, this time of year they are just starting. Use your electronics, if you have side imaging that works the best to cover a lot of area and to see the fish and weeds. Look for areas that are 10-15' deep with a slow break. put out 20' of line behind the boat a start at about 1 mph and depending on the day go a little slower or faster see what works the best. I use a crawler but leaches work well also. If you use a each just cut off the extra hook.

TechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileTough smallmouth bite. Fished Kabetogama from 6/7 through 6/11. Water temps started out at 70 degrees, creeped up to 74 degrees, then a cold front moved in and knocked the water temps down to 65 degrees. The most successful technique was cranking squarebills over shallow rocks near islands. Topwater poppers worked well at times. I believe the key was to make noise, vibration or use bright colors due to low water clarity.

TechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersFished Kab from 6/7 through 6/11. Water temps ranged from 65 to 74 degrees. Walleyes were everywhere from 2' out to 30'+. Finding biting fish was tough. Mayflies and leeches were plentiful so getting them to chase/bite your presenation was difficult. Loud & vibrant crankbaits worked best, with bobber & leeches also catching some fish.

TechniqueHard Topwater (Walking)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileMany of the smallmouth are spawn and post-spawn and are on rocks around spawning bays. Throwing a walking bait worked well for covering areas and getting good bites.

TechniqueVertical Jigging Deep (20'+)SeasonSummerStructureHumpsUse your electronics to locate schools of fish and drop down to them. Use your electronics to stay above the school and keep bouncing the jig a foot or two off the bottom. You can tie the mono to the braid and use a snap swivel the attach the jig to your line or use a short piece of mono about 3 feet long to attach to the braid to the mono and then tie to the jig Good luck!
