TechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersFished Kab from 6/7 through 6/11. Water temps ranged from 65 to 74 degrees. Walleyes were everywhere from 2' out to 30'+. Finding biting fish was tough. Mayflies and leeches were plentiful so getting them to chase/bite your presenation was difficult. Loud & vibrant crankbaits worked best, with bobber & leeches also catching some fish.

TechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileTough smallmouth bite. Fished Kabetogama from 6/7 through 6/11. Water temps started out at 70 degrees, creeped up to 74 degrees, then a cold front moved in and knocked the water temps down to 65 degrees. The most successful technique was cranking squarebills over shallow rocks near islands. Topwater poppers worked well at times. I believe the key was to make noise, vibration or use bright colors due to low water clarity.

TechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationLook for wind blown shorelines with weeds coming up, this time of year they are just starting. Use your electronics, if you have side imaging that works the best to cover a lot of area and to see the fish and weeds. Look for areas that are 10-15' deep with a slow break. put out 20' of line behind the boat a start at about 1 mph and depending on the day go a little slower or faster see what works the best. I use a crawler but leaches work well also. If you use a each just cut off the extra hook.

TechniqueHard Topwater (Popping)SeasonSummerStructureHumpsMid summer mornings with no wind look for reefs that top out at 5’-10’. Try surface baits, toss them out on the reef tops and slowly pop them back to the boat. When the smally hits wait a couple seconds before setting the hook. I like to use braid and tie 5' - 8' of mono to it, it acts like a shock absorber. Good luck.

TechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureLedgesJune is a great time to pull spinners along the wind blown shorelines, troll at .75 - 1.25 mph. get out away from the boat start with a 1/8 oz sinker. use your electronics to locate the fish, they are normally in 5' - 15' of water. Use a crawler or cut the back hook off and use a leach or minnow. The fish are normally feeding on minnows or bugs. when you feel the fish hit wait a second or two and set the hook, it will give them a chance to suck the bait into there mouth. I like to use a braid as my mainline but mono works just as good. Good Luck!

TechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureLedgesAfter a hot bite all spring, a stable high pressure fair weather front moved in the first week of June 2022. Little wind and bright sunny days all week made walleye fishing tough. Still, we caught several keeper walleye and sauger targeting the base of reef and shoreline breaks in 30-35 ft of water. 1/4 oz round jig and minnow were the ticket and also a drop shot with a #3 Gamakatsu octopus hook. The walleye and sauger turned their nose at leeches but a leech bite should start soon. Water was still 5ft high with tons of water in the woods. Traditional smallmouth spawning grounds were likely out of commission and thus the smallmouth were in a funky pre-spawn phase likely searching for new spawning areas. As such the smallmouth bite was non-existent for me last week.
