Many of the smallmouth are spawn and post-spawn and are on rocks around spawning bays. Throwing a walking bait worked well for covering areas and getting good bites.

After a hot bite all spring, a stable high pressure fair weather front moved in the first week of June 2022. Little wind and bright sunny days all week made walleye fishing tough. Still, we caught several keeper walleye and sauger targeting the base of reef and shoreline breaks in 30-35 ft of water. 1/4 oz round jig and minnow were the ticket and also a drop shot with a #3 Gamakatsu octopus hook. The walleye and sauger turned their nose at leeches but a leech bite should start soon. Water was still 5ft high with tons of water in the woods. Traditional smallmouth spawning grounds were likely out of commission and thus the smallmouth were in a funky pre-spawn phase likely searching for new spawning areas. As such the smallmouth bite was non-existent for me last week.
