This new catch and release season has truly been the bomb. This definitely beats crappie fishing 😉. Look forward to catching more fat mammas. Get out there and enjoy it.

Find shallow bays, where the water warms up after first ice off, focus on the north east corners of the bays where the water will warm faster. Or find bays where small creeks dump into the bay. Look for active bugs swimming on the surface and you'll find the crappie.

The larger crappies have been moving shallow! We have had our best success in the 2-6ft weed clumps on the outside of spawning bays/cuts. Slow reeling a bobber to keep that bait in the strike zone has been very productive. We have found that greens and whites have been very productive colors. Have to remember that this time of year, not every fish is shallow, there is still a very large majority of big fish out staging, preparing to move in. Small tubes and creature baits, even ice fishing jigs and plastics have been very productive.
