Smallmouth BassTechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBouldersWater temp high 40s, catching staging smallmouth in 5-15ft off rock with a small swimbait as well as a hair jig when the wind calmed down. The line thru head with a small treble upped my hook up ratio considerably.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBoulders5/14/22 - 5/15/22: The bite was a little tough with the high wind and big rollers but we were around the right caliber of fish in the Inaugural Governor's Cup Bass Tournament. We managed to bring in a few over the four pound mark and found the 1-3 pound bass prevalent in some areas. The heartbreaker was have two giants (6+ lbs) come off within 5 feet of the boat. The only baits they would really bite were deep diving suspending jerkbaits in perch color and a green pumpkin tube dragged at a painfully slow pace.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBouldersThe smallies were holding tight to the boulders and you would rarely see them off the bottom on FFS. If you did see them up they were extremely aggressive. Long pauses were a big key and working the bait over isolated boulders to get the fish to show themselves.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSummerStructureBoulders7/16 - 7/17: The fish have scattered much more from last week. We spent too much time up shallow. There were still some fish in 5 - 15 ft but the vast majority were chasing bait in 25 - 45 ft of water. They were very finicky and did not engulf the lighter ned rig like last weekend. I didn't have any luck with a hair jig, and very little luck with the tube. There were 2 main bite windows: early morning and mid day. Most of our fish hit a drop shot on the fall. A few would follow it down and hit it within 30 seconds of the drop after working the bait a little bit. With the waves it made it difficult to stay on the schools. The best bet is to sit on one rock pile. We ran around too much.
