Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureBaitfishIt was slow. It was hard to get all bites by hard jerkbait. Soft jerkabait and tube also worked.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueUnderspinsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureRock PileThe south winds were BLOWING and abusing me in my little kayak, but the water was crystal clear and I knew it was smallie time. I didn’t catch many, only caught 3, but the ones I did catch were TANKS. My smallest fish of the day was 3lbs. Targeted rock piles on the mile roads with my natural looking underspin and a finesse tube and caught some hogs. Saw guys catching more numbers fishing jerkbaits. Happy hunting!

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileWindy day on St Clair but we stayed out of it mostly in Anchor Bay. Some fish are still shallow as there were many boats still checking beds. We opted to stay between 6 and 9 FOW with drop shots and coffee tubes. Not many big fish today but as usual on St Clair the numbers are phenomenal.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationFinding deep grass patches in 17-22 fow was key to holding bait and bass. There were big schools of perch mixed in the grass and the smallmouth would key in on the edges of the grass. There were also many walleye in these areas following the bait around. Finding multiple grass patches is important because fish will roam and move with the perch.

Largemouth BassTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePilingsWhile the mayfly/fish fly hatch may have some scratching their heads as to how to get the bass to bite while they’re gorging themselves on natures bounty, we were throwing wacky rigs from the shoreline at first light and early morning to get on that feeding frenzy bite!
