Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePointsWater temps in the AM were 67 but warmed up to 70-71 main lake by late afternoon. We caught quite a few Smallies targeting main lake points and the shorelines near them. The windier the better it seemed. The big bites seemed to escape us this day, tubes and hair picked up some but Jerkbaits were the ticket for us.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueFinesse Hair JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersTook 1st during the MinnYak Elite Trail Series Event. Started running shoreline with a popper, but as the sun got high I transitioned to a hair jig and just covered water. When I slowed down, I used a drop shot which helped me land big bass for the event. Bites were consistent throughout the day, allowing me to come across some bigger ones for a nice pay day.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureDocksJust fished a kayak tournament on Vermillion and although I didn’t find the quality as some of the anglers there were plenty of fish to be caught shallow. Caught many fish on a variety of baits. Walking bait, Ned rig, drop shot, swim baits, and wacky rigs. I had the best success using a wacky rig and a 4” pink stick bait skipping docks and targeting big boulders. Those who finished at the top had success with poppers and hair jigs also targeting big boulders and docks in the areas they had found their fish. There are a lot of pike hanging out in many of the shallower bays where the weed growth is starting to grow. Was even able catch a bonus musky on a walking bait (picture/release).

Smallmouth BassTechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePointsI had one of my best mornings on Vermilion in a while with 16.5lbs of brown hitting the deck in 2.5 hours. Almost every fish came on a paddletail slow rolled around points. The fish were post spawn and appeared to me gourging themselves with crayfish. I came to find I usually fish paddletails too fast. If you're not bumping rocks (or getting snagged) try slowing down.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersFound fish from 1-9’ using 3 techniques. Drop shot produced better fish around boulders, but would get hung up easily. Morning started with a small popper, lots of short strikes. I would follow up with the drop shot if they missed the popper and wouldn’t hit again after a cast or 2. Threw a spinnerbait between spots I had marked to cover water effectively. Produced a few fish.
