Largemouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureOpen Water/BasinCasting parallel to shore, keeping the lure near the bottom in 3-4ft of water. Four were caught that day, all on the BX Brat. The largest of them (pictured) was 4lbs 4oz.

Largemouth BassTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructureLedgesSurface activity tapered off as the sun came out. Switched to a small wacky rig and caught 3 bass around 2lbs. I love the action of the Z-man Fatty. The middle joint gives it a little extra wobble!

Largemouth BassTechniqueUnderspinsSeasonSummerStructureDamI noticed elevated minnow activity on the shoreline, so I grabbed my ultralight setup and headed out. Casting parallel to the shore in 1-3ft of water yielded 3 bass (largest was 2.6#), and a few pumpkinseed. Fun morning!

Largemouth BassTechniqueUnderspinsSeasonSummerStructurePointsFishing around bluegill beds to see what was biting. I had witnessed some fairly aggressive bass come in to take bluegill, so it seemed like a decent strategy. I wound up catching an 8oz bluegill, a crappie, a white bass, and multiple bass in the 2-3lbs range. Omnia currently doesn't stock it, but my go-to soft plastic has been the Berkeley 2" paddle tail in grasshopper.

CatfishTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructureLedgesThere is a deeper section of the pond at the mouth of a cove at Mill Creek Pond. Throwing soft plastics in there has yielded many decent bass over the years, but never a catfish! I thought for certain I had a monster bass, as this cat fought like hell to stay deep. Once landed, I identified it as a white catfish and got a weight -- 4lbs 6oz, a trophy size white catfish for North Carolina! Not a bass, but something really special all the same!

Largemouth BassTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructurePointsI fished from 9:45am to 1pm. It was hot and partly cloudy, and most of the bait fish had gone to deeper water, it seemed. Swim baits weren't working, so I threw the wacky rigged worm and it yielded a few ~1lbs bass and a few fat bullheads. Better luck tomorrow?

Largemouth BassTechniqueSoft JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBaitfishThere were lots of shad bait balls around the pond, so I spent the better part of morning throwing the soft jerkbait around them. Several takers, just not a single bass over 3lbs. It was a fun Father's Day nonetheless!

Largemouth BassTechniqueCarolina RigsSeasonSummerStructurePointsIt's been brutally hot lately, punctuated by heavy rain, so the pond is a little high, a little murky, and there's a good amount of floating debris near the shore in some places. I decided to go with the Carolina rig this morning to get underneath the floating sticks and leaves to provoke some bites. Fished for 3 hours, caught 2 bass and a catfish, nothing over 2lbs. Better than being skunked!
