It would drop into the grass and I’d let it sit for 10 sec then I’d give it a quick snap and that’s when this fish hammered the Firecraw! This is a great time to be fishing red lures! This wiper put up a great fight and It was a blast getting it hooked!

SpeciesLargemouth BassTechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationI fished the 2nd stop of the Team Trail Outdoors TX tournament trail for 2023 on the lake on 04/08/23 with my tournament partner Iain. It was a nice day, with morning temperatures starting out in the mid 50 degree marks and warming up to about 80 degrees outside by the end of the day. There was a slow northeast breeze all day and it was mostly sunny outside with a few clouds. The water temperatures ranged anywhere from about 63-71 degrees and the water clarity ranged anywhere from about 6 inches of visibility to about 2 feet of visibility. We spent the day fishing submerged vegetation on flats in 2-4 feet of water, as well as the rip rap along the dam of the lake, which Z-Man Jack Hammer Chatterbaits in the 3/8 Ounce Size in the Spot Remover color, with shad colored Lake Fork Trophy Lures Live Magic Shads as the trailer. We were also able to get a few bites with a light texas rigged swimbait, using either the magic shad or a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper in sexy shad as the bait, just swimming it over the grass flats like we were doing with the chatterbaits. We had probably the worst tournament practice we had ever had the day before, only catching 5 fish total and only 3 small keepers on main lake rock and wood with finesse baits. So, tournament morning we decided to just scrap all of that and go fishing with an open mind for the event, and boy did it pay off. We were able to catch a limit of bass weighing 18.80 pounds in the event which got us 12th place out of 186 teams and a nice check to go with it! The unusual Winter storm we had in February seems to have the fish confused. The majority of the fish we caught were moving up. We saw a few on beds but not many. The most productive bait was the 1/2 oz Jackhammer in Fire Craw with a Hog Farmer Spunk Shad trailer in Blow Torch in 5 to 7 FOW.

It was partly cloudy to overcast all day with a steady south wind to start the morning, and then shifting to a very strong north wind. The outside temperatures throughout the day started in the mid to upper 70's and then dropped into the low 60's and high 50's when the front came through mid day. The water temperature on the lake ranged from 64 - 71 degrees and the water clarity ranged from 6 inches of visibility to about a foot of visibility. We started the morning on a shallow spawning flat we found the day before in practice with a good amount of grass and timber spread throughout it. After catching one fish early on a buzzbait and having a few missed opportunities on a frog, we started using a chatterbait to cover the edges of the shallow grass targeting fish cruising the spawning flat, as well as flipping a texas rig at the base of the many cedar trees on the flat to target fish staging to move up on beds. We were also able to catch a few later in the day flipping the tires at the mouth of the marina on the lake that proved to be some key culls. Doing this, we were able to catch a limit weighing 18.36 pounds, which was good enough to get us 8th place and a check in the tournament. I have put a picture of our bag from the tournament below. I went out to the lake on 04/15/22 to practice for an upcoming college tournament I had the next day. It was cloudy outside with a strong south wind and temperatures reaching into the low 80's. Water temperatures across the lake ranged from 62 - 71 degrees and the clarity ranged anywhere from a few inches of visibility to about a foot of visibility. We spent the day looking in shallow spawning pockets catching a few early on jigs and chatterbaits, and then using a frog throughout the day to locate beds on the flats. The wind, clouds, and stained water made it extremely difficult to see the beds, so we used the frogs to get the bass to blow up and reveal the location of the beds so we could come back to them the next day in the tournament. In the process of doing so, I decided to set the hook on one of the fish, and it ended up being an 8 pounder (pictured below). Thank you all for reading the report and tight lines!
