We hit the water early at Cape Fair for a Sunday Buddy Bass tournament and kicked things off with a bang. My very first fish of the day turned out to be the second biggest bass of the entire tournament a solid 5.19-pounder on an Alabama rig. That really set the tone for the morning. Patterns and Techniques We noticed our fish were holding a bit shallower than most folks were expecting for this time of year generally in that 5 to 10 foot range. After that first big catch, we started scooping up more fish on a minnow presentation and found a couple more decent ones around the 3-pound mark. The challenge was consistency lots of small fish mixed in, and we ended up with a couple under two pounds that kept us from climbing higher on the leaderboard. Key Spots and Lures The best bites came from a mix of spots: some fish were shallow on brush piles and secondary points leading back into pockets, while others were out a bit deeper where we could spot them on electronics and pick them off. The Alabama rig was definitely the hero of the day, and the fish were relating to shad, so once we found that bait, we found the bass. Final Results We ended up finishing sixth overall with a total bag of 16.55 pounds. Not a bad showing, but definitely room to climb. With the lake getting more pressure from upcoming tournaments, the fish were a bit finicky, but it was all about finding the right combination of bait and location. Table Rock Lake Fishing Report: February 2026 Early Morning Start at Aunt’s Creek We hit the water at about 7:30 a.m. off the Aunt’s Creek boat ramp. It was a chilly morning, but the fish didn’t seem to mind. We actually started catching fish right around the ramp area pretty quickly. Nothing huge most were in that 2.5 pound range but it was a nice way to kick things off. The surprise was that the fish were still sitting a bit shallower than expected, mostly in that 25-foot depth range. Moving Up the James River Later in the day, we made a run up the James River arm. We didn’t find as many fish up there, but when we did locate a pod, they were fired up and ready to play. The Alabama rig was the star of the show on those main lake and secondary points, especially around brush in the 10 to 20 foot range. We found plenty of fish stacked up on brush piles, even if they weren’t the giants we dream about. Luckily, this was just a scouting trip and not a tournament day, so it was all about figuring out the pattern and having a good time. Caught quite a few fish this weekend on a A-Rig over the tree tops on bluff ends. Keeping the rig 5-10 foot over the fish was key. Let them eat up.
