WalleyeTechniqueBobbersSeasonIceStructureBaitfishWe fished the weekend of December 11th and the walleyes were being very finicky. Our best luck was on minnows on a dead stick a foot off the bottom.

WalleyeTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureRip RapThe Tingler Spoon is a great spoon for neutral or negative fish, drop it down and bounce it off the bottom a few times and reel up 2'-3' and start jigging slow. Make sure the one treble hook is centered on the back of the spoon and tip it with a minnow head. As the season goes on work yourself out from the first break to the basin.

WalleyeTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureLedges12/13/2020: 10" of ice. By now most guys are pushing "deep" (13-14') to fish new water and get away from the masses, however a shallow bit still exists if you are willing to cover ground and get away from the crowds and road traffic. We did quite well in 10' of water with spoons and deadsticks with a minnow and plain hook. If they didn't bite the spoon it was more than likely they would hit the deadstick rod so it was important to have both. Red, glow red, and chartreuse are always good starting places. Tie on a rattling spoon or rattling hard bait to help call fish in to your area if its slow.

WalleyeTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonIceStructureBaitfishWater was murky from ice making so we drew them in with rattling raps and drop shots. Aggressive bite at ~9’ and snagged every one that came. Many throw backs as you can only keep one over 17”. Had a blast on the morning bite and left with limits of walleye (4/ea) and some 15” crappie by noon. We heard night bite suffered as the weekend warriors continued to arrive.

WalleyeTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureOpen Water/BasinThis was my first ever trip out on Red Lake. I got out there early ice. There Around 7-8 inches of ice. I will encourage you to go during the week.(I went on a Monday). As there is significantly less people out on the lake during the week. I caught my limit in about 5 hours. Was a ton of fun, and the fish were super aggressive. I caught my fish in around 8.5 ft of water. Though depending on the day fish will be in different depth zones, so don't be afraid to change depth. I caught fish on a clam leech flutter spoon(1/8oz) and a Clam Tikka Minnow(3/16oz). Work the baits aggressively and grab the brightest color you can find.

WalleyeTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureBaitfishAll season Upper Red lake is a Walleye Factory, early ice start out by getting out to the first break, as the season goes on stay on the move and just keep going deeper. Use a small snap at your spoon and a 2' leader and tie a small swivel there for line twist. Drop your spoon to the bottom and bounce it a few time off the bottom. Reel up about 2' and start jigging slowly as the fish come in keep jigging, if they don't hit reel up slowly playing keep away. Good Luck!

WalleyeTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureBaitfishEarly Ice on red Lake is some of the best Walleye Fishing of the Hard water Season. Get out to 8-10 feet of water or more and drill out a area, drop your Rippin Rap down and bounce it of the bottom a few times and reel up about 2-3 feet of the bottom and jig slowly. Don't overwork a Rippin Rap under the ice. When you see a fish come in keep jigging and if it doesn't hit and is just looking at it reel up a couple inches and keep jigging and keep doing this tell it hits or moves on. I like to use a ball bearing snap at the bait most of the time but you can tie direct if you like. Good Luck!
