Largemouth BassTechniqueSpoonsSeasonWinterStructureLaydownsLast ice of the year, they were out chasing shad and we caught up with them. You can find on your sonar bass schooling up on Shad, you can then drop down and get one. The ice will be melted soon, but when it is you can get a good idea of where the bass will be. We were also able to use tip ups with shiners, that mimic shad and baitfish

Largemouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonFallStructureBoulders9-12-21 Tough day on whalon, winds were whipping pretty quick and the water was churned up for a sunny day. Fished hard with a lot of techniques for hours and finally found two short but thick largemouth that hit a stunna jerk bait in the shallows. Slow day but a good day at the lake.

Largemouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonFallStructureReeds9-25-2021 Worked the west side of Whalon from shore for bass with Jerkbaits and shallow cranks as the water line was significantly low with the drought. The morning started off slow but was able to get 3 nice largemouth in a few hours. The winds picked up and a storm chug bug popper brought in the first one followed by two hitting a megabass jerkbait as bass seemed to be chasing schools of shad about 20 feet out from shore.

Largemouth BassTechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationRainfall in the prespawn period at Whalon lake can dirty up its naturally crystal clear water, making power fishing techniques work a lot better. I had lots of luck with a jackhammer in submerged grass in 7 ft of water a ways out from the bank.

Largemouth BassTechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureRock PileThe Berkley Slobberknocker has been on fire on my new Lew’s signature series bladed jig and custom pro combo. Bluegill color with dark blade in the sun and white with gold blade in the cloudy rainy days. Bouncing off rock piles as the bass are moving up along shore. Fish the wind blown shore as they chase the bait.

Largemouth BassTechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationWhalon was ON FIRE today! Any swim jig that mimics a bluegill is what you need to catch some nice fish here. Simply find some weeds by looking for them because the water is so clear and reel the swim jig through them. I was there for 3 hours and ended up catching and releasing a 14.8 lb limit with a 4.8 lb kicker! Water was very clear with a temp of 60 degrees. Wind was 15-20mph.

Largemouth BassTechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationWacky rigs are a great choice for lots of numbers post spawn on Whalon lake. Use a smaller hook and a natural color wacky rig for the best results. Another tip is to use a yellow colored braided line because when fishing in the wind, you can see your line jump easier if a fish takes it as a wacky rig is hard to feel when it’s windy out.
