Largemouth BassTechniqueNeko RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePointsWe had a really solid day out there fishing main lake and secondary points on the lower end of Wheeler. We caught plenty of fish but no monsters. Our best 5 probably would’ve went 13-14lbs. We caught both large and smallmouth.

Largemouth BassTechniqueHard Topwater (Walking)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBaitfishI got out on Wheeler and took my neighbor's kid who is getting into fishing. I figured the shad spawn would be a good time for him to catch some. I took him to one of my yearly shad spawn area and they were there. We caught them on Nichols spinnerbaits, Cumberland Pro Bama Swim Jig with a Riot Cyclone trailer, and 6th Sense Dogma during the shad spawn. When the shad spawn bite died, we went and fished off shore dropshotting and dragging worms and c-rigs. We had a good day. Take a kid fishing, when you can, it is so rewarding.

Largemouth BassTechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBaitfishI had a small club tournament on Wheeler. There where a bunch of tournaments going on so people where everywhere. I fished my plan but the wind had a different plan than was ideal for me. I couldn't get on a shad spawn like last week. The fish didn't want a topwater because of the wind and I switched to a jerkbait. Started catching largemouth and smallmouth right away. The only 2 good smallies pulled off at boat trying to play them out. Caught a lot of 14.75 inch smallies, have to be 15 inches. Decided to fish deep and caught fish on dropshot and a big shakeyhead (local made 3/4 oz football head and mag trick worm) on a ditch with shell. Just never got the better bite this week where they came easy last week. Ended up catching a bunch of fish but only had 10.5 lbs. The Opens guys will be fully offshore.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueShallow Diving Crankbaits (0-6')SeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureRock PileMain lake current breaks were key areas with shallow diving crankbaits. Position yourself down river from the structure and make casts against the current for a natural presentation. Gravel points, rock piles, and boulders were great indicators for productive current breaks.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureRock PileI went out of Ditto to chase the spawning smallies that I found with my wife on the 12th (pior fishing report). I got to the bluff end that we caught them on the day before, and I caught a 4 lb largemouth on a drop shot flatworm and a couple of 3 lb smallies on the Riot Probe. I continued to run the bluff end pattern but could never get on any bigger fish. I caught a bunch of spotters bass on every bluff end. I tried with the drop shot and shakeyhead. Fun day, I just wish I could have caught them as good with the GoPro running as I did without it running. I think all 3 species are trying to spawn with the water up to full pool now and getting stable and warming. But 12 with two 1 lb spots in the limit..

Smallmouth BassTechniqueShakey HeadsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureRip RapMy wife said she wanted to go fishing, so we took the afternoon off and put in at Ditto Landing. The wind was blowing pretty well, so I used an app to find bluffs out of the wind. We fished a bluff that I knew would be good this time of year because the smallies like to spawn on the bluff end. Sure enough, we caught them there dragging a shakeyhead probe until the water got muddy. We also went into the lighthouse bay and caught a few spots and a 3 lb largemouth on the shakeyhead as well. A real good 3 hours with one of my favorite fishing partners.

Largemouth BassTechniqueShakey HeadsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureLedgesFished event three of the Choo-Choo division of the MLF BFLs on Wheeler lake. Was able to finish 17th as a co-angler with a 9' 13 " bag. Caught all my keepers working current seems in 8-10 feet of water. Water temp was 56 degree and we has post front conditions. Fish just did not seem to react to moving baits today even thought we had a nice breeze.
