TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureRip RapFishing rip rap breaks near spawning flats. Targeting areas that the smallmouth would likely stage waiting to spawn. We have a full moon right now, so finding the fish was the tricky part because they were constantly moving. Once you found them you could really beat on them with a steady jerking cadence. 40-80 fish days aren’t uncommon. This day I did about 45 in 3 hours. When it was low light and cloudy I used Mat Skeleton vision 110. When the clouds went away and became bright sunny I switched between the Mavrik, and vision 110 in GG deadly black shad.

TechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileFishing the Buckeye division BFL out of Sandusky Bay as a co-angler. Started the morning out on the lake fishing rock piles. Caught a few 1.5 to 2.5 pounds smallmouth on a Baby Z-Too on a dropshot. Moved into Sandusky Bay later in the morning, and caught some 1 to 2 pound largemouth on the dropshot and a Hybrid Hunter fishing rip rap around bridges.

TechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersWhen it comes to trying to catch post-spawn smallmouth on the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie out of Buffalo, NY, after these fish spawn out from 3' out to 35', they follow the baitfish into the current. The main thing to look at is how much water is being pulled by the Niagara Falls and the Niagara Power Plant in the lower river. It seems to change the flow of water heavily.
