WalleyeTechniqueLive Bait RigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureRock PileOnce the MN fishing opener happens 5-15-21, most walleyes in Vermilion will be done spawning. Look to rocky shorelines with a gradual drop to deeper water in the morning or evening. The classic jig and rainbow chub is hard to beat on Vermilion. Don't rule out slow trolling cranks in low light along the areas. If the fish aren't eating shallow, head to the deeper mud in 20'-30' and try a jigging rap. This technique is particularly effective on the bright days.

Largemouth BassTechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureLily PadsFished the west end of Vermillion. Most consistent bite was finding the warmer water. Black Bay and river in under 5 foot produced good numbers on the swim jig, followed up by slowing down with senkos and pitching jigs.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBouldersAs of fishing opener weekend, water temps were in the mid to upper 50s in most of Vermilion with a few smaller bays peaking into low 60s. Water is about a foot low & water color is as clear as I have ever seen it. Vast majority of both bass species are in Pre Spawn mode, but lake is warming fast & so are the bass. For the most part smallmouth are on shallow boulder areas leading into spawning pockets. Jerkbaits in natural patterns with some chartreuse & perch imitating chatterbaits both produced well. We found largemouth hanging around emerging pads & old reed beds. Black & Blue Swim jigs were the most productive for finding & catching chunky largemouth
