The final event of the 2021 MLF Pro Circuit was on the St. Lawrence River from July 29- Aug 1st. I had strong tournament finishing in 19th place with weights of 15.25, 19.75 and 18lbs over the course of the 3 days. In this event I was targeting shallow largemouth on docks with a Z-Man Goat on a Hayabusa 4/0 FPP Straight Shank hook and 1/2oz Angler tungsten weight. These fish were in 6' and less of water using the docks as shade and an ambush point. I then was fishing rocky flats with a dropshotted Z-Man Trick Shotz that was threaded on a 2/0 Hayabusa FPP Straight hook and 3/8oz Angler Tungsten weight. These fish were all in their summer mode. I had some shallower fish 10' and less and some deeper fishing in 20-35'. Super fun trip casting Keitech 4" Easy Shiners on 3/8 oz VMC jigheads for these St. Lawrence River pre-spawn walleye. Fish were holding in 24- to 32-foot on the ledges adjacent to the main channel. Best presentation was casting out, let it fall to the bottom, reel in to form a semi-tight line, lift the swimbait off the bottom and let the current sweep it down stream for 2 to 3-seconds as the jig falls back to the bottom. Repeat that cadence until a walleye hits it. The fish usually hit on the first or second lift, but a few hit it on the 4th or 5th lift. Key to the presentation is using 5 lb. Cortland Masterbraid with a 36-40" section of 10.9 lb. Cortland Top Secret Fluorocarbon. This braid helps with solid hooksets when the fish are light biting. Some fish hammered it, while others bites you would just feel the weight of fish as theyd pick up the swimbait and head toward derper water. I used a Temple Fork Outfitters Professional.walleye rod, model PRO WS 704-1, paired with a size 3000 spinning reel.
