Smallmouth BassTechniqueNed RigsSeasonWinterStructurePilingsFish were grouped up in slack water eddys feeding consistently on baits with passive action worked very slowly on hard bottoms. Passive action of the TicklerZ allowed for minute current to make them move while keeping the bait relatively still and in the strike zone longer. The recent cold front has the smallmouth in full on winter mode with water temps dropping into the high 30s.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueUmbrella RigsSeasonWinterStructureRock PileMade a trip out to the Susquehanna River to fish a wintering area where the smallmouth bass have been piling into during the past month. The water was between 39 and 42 degrees so we had to fish slow with with a G-Man ballin out jig and a zman trd ticklerz feathering the baits with the current to get to the fish sitting behind boulders in the deeper water between 10-20'. The a-rig loaded up with 3"zman Minnowz also got the job done in the afternoon when the sun got up and warmed the water column some.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueNed RigsSeasonWinterStructureBouldersI was fishing a current seam around a rock boulder. This created a secondary channel that dropped off to 6-8’. I was dead sticking for long periods with slight hops here and there. The smallies were picking it right up off the bottom. I was mainly target the 5-3ft slack water near this channel. It was not a fast bite. The fish that were eating though were in the 3-5.5 range. Very slow retrieves were the key.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueNed RigsSeasonWinterStructureLedgesI was fishing a current seam in 8-10 foot of water. This was creating a slack pool as it got closer to the bank. The smallies were eating it right off the bottom but, the fights were sluggish.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Large)SeasonFallStructureRip RapA majority of fish caught during this trip were caught on suspending jerkbaits, dead sticked and ripped on current seams when the bait started to be turned by the current. The largest fish though, they were caught slow rolling a Meglajohn swimbait against rip rap later in the day when the sun came up.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueFinesse Hair JigsSeasonWinterStructureBouldersThe water was rising and murky from recent rains. Lots of leaves and other debris coming down the river. The extremely slow retrieve of the hair jig at creek mouths was key to getting bites
